Do not be put off by the parking lot which is a bit shabby, the rooms are completely the opposite, cozy, and extremely clean. The rooms are quiet considering there is a high traffic road outside, most visitors have no problem with noise, but potentially the traffic could be an issue if you are a light sleeper.

It is not long since the restaurant next door purchased the motel and there will likely be further integration of services. The food in the family restaurant is highly praised and very enjoyable. You get better views from the upper floor.

If heading to Mackinaw, it is only a fifteen minutes drive. Adjacent to the motel is a “Big Boy” restaurant, which was very handy, and opposite the motel is a Walmart, if you need anything during your stay. Overall it is a pleasant place to stay.

Sunset Motel on the Bay (Two.five stars)

1315 Bay St, Munising, MI 49862-1511

All rooms at the Sunset Motel on the Bay have stupendous views of Lake Superior. There are units with one, two, or three bedrooms, and all of them are just steps away from Lake Superior. It is a beachfront motel within easy reach of Hiawatha National Forest, and a great place for a vacation. Incidentally, they do also offer holiday homes.

The views of the sunset from the hotel are stunning, hence the name of the motel. Some rooms have a balcony overlooking the lake, and the motel will supply chairs for sitting next to the water.

The motel also has some extra features …

1. Picnic area adjacent to the Lake

2. Grills available

3. Chairs available for sitting by the water

4. Picnic tables are available

5. Vacation homes available

Most people just love the proximity of the motel to the lake. It is a peaceful place to relax and chill. While service and facilities were all very good, the motel décor is very dated and very much in need of renovation. The breakfast could also use an upgrade, perhaps add yogurt? In the evening the sunsets are so delightful that quite a few people gather to watch. Conclusion: Despite the magnificent sunsets and location of the motel, it may be regarded as slightly overpriced.

The hotel also features the “HarbourQ, a BBQ place on Main Street.

Probably the most memorable thing about the hotel is its location. For visitors to the attractions, it could not be placed in a better position. They are particularly helpful with luggage, storing it before check-in and after check-out. They will also deliver luggage to the ferry should you so require.

The hotel is around half a mile from the city center on Mackinac Island. Fort holmes are about a third of a mile away, and Fort Holmes just over half a mile. The harbor view is particularly enjoyable. The hotel is wheelchair accessible.

The hotel has a few problems like no coffee maker in the rooms, and not all rooms have air conditioning. The hotel is two miles from the airport and is one of many along Traverse Bay. It is a pleasant hotel but a bit of a misnomer to call it a resort as it lacks many of the amenities you would normally find at a resort. The staff was very helpful in directing us to places to visit and eat. Hot coffee was available 24hours a day, and children were cleared from the pool area at 10 pm, which remained open till midnight. There is a water slide (100 ft) but it is closed during COVID restrictions. If guests need it there is also a useful laundry room. We included this in our top hotels mainly because of the helpful staff. This outweighed a few minor faults like limited hot water at peak time in the morning (it could sometimes take a few minutes for the water to warm up). The responsive, helpful staff goes a long way.

Bed & Breakfasts

If you are looking for a more welcoming and laid back place to stay, you really should consider a Bed & Breakfast. Both of the Bed and Breakfasts we feature have a wonderful reputation for offering a great welcome and first-rate customer service.
